CHAPTER ELEVEN

A MONTH FLIES BY, AND I find myself lying on Chance and Hillary’s couch on a Friday, watching some rom com. We’ve been spending lots of casual time together over the last few weeks, both at my house and his apartment. He’s playing basketball with us regularly, and if we sit shoulder to shoulder on the couch instead of at opposite ends, Hillary doesn’t seem to think anything of it. Chance and I have been squeezing in quickies where we can, but we never really get time to be together...and now, we haven’t had any time alone for ten days.

With all the music groups trying to squeeze in one more concert before summer, I’ve been booked almost every night. And when I’m not, he has to meet with his team or run a long experiment. Sigh. I don’t know how I fucked up my karma so bad, but I can’t stop staring at Chance across the room.

He gives me a stern knock it off look behind Hillary’s back when she goes to refill the chip bowl, and I just run a hand up the inside of my leg suggestively from where I lie on the couch. His eyes go wide with disbelief.

“Oh!”

My heart stops. Did she see me? But when I look, Hillary’s staring at her phone. “Blake’s in town!” Good, go out with Blake and let me kiss and cuddle your roommate in peace.

“Who’s Blake?” Chance asks, rolling his empty root beer bottle between his fingers.

Wait, kiss and cuddle? Is that really what I want?

“Our cousin,” I answer.

“Col, he wants to meet us at Ground Kontrol.”

Oh, fuck.

I adjust my hat as I stall to figure out what to say. “I’m too tired to go all the way out there.”

Hillary marches over to me and puts a hand to my forehead.

“Stop that,” I say, pushing her hand away and fixing my hat again.

“You must be sick. It’s the only explanation for why you would pass up the chance to spend time at your favorite place with your favorite people.”

On any other day, she’d be right. Ground Kontrol has all these classic video games and pinball machines and good food. It’s the best kind of vibe. Problem is, tonight, my favorite place is Wherever I Can be Alone with Chance, and my favorite person is Chance. End of list.

“It’s kind of a long way...”

“Are you serious?” When she sees that I am, she turns to Chance. “You should come meet him. Blake’s so great. And he’s an engineer, so there’ll be lots of good science-y talk.”

“I’m not into crowds, as you well know,” Chance mumbles, avoiding her gaze. We’re both terrible liars, and I have no idea how she isn’t seeing through this. It’s as transparent as Saran wrap.

“I don’t believe you two! It’s not even 9:00! And it’s the weekend! Come on, you’ve both done nothing but work lately. You need this. Also, I don’t want to go alone.”

No, what I need is Chance. I don’t analyze the thought.

“You should take Janey,” I offer.
